The Silent Killer in Your Building

Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless, and tasteless — completely undetectable without a working carbon monoxide alarm. Over 65% of CO injuries and deaths in Ontario occur in homes, most while occupants are asleep. A properly installed CO alarm in Toronto homes, rentals, and commercial buildings is the only legally recognized warning system. Under the updated CO alarm Ontario rules, every qualifying property must now be equipped on every storey.

Ontario Fire Code Carbon Monoxide

The New Rules, Explained

The 2026 Fire Code CO alarm requirements affect nearly every type of property in Ontario.

Every Floor Now Requires a CO Alarm

Previously only near bedrooms. Now required on every storey including basements and floors without bedrooms.

Applies to ALL Existing Homes

Not just new builds. Every existing home, rental, condo, townhouse, and cottage that meets the conditions must comply immediately.

Landlords Are Legally Responsible

In rental properties the landlord must install and maintain alarms. Tenants cannot be held responsible.

Condo Corporations Must Comply

Common areas, corridors, and service rooms all require CO alarms where fuel-burning equipment is present.

Commercial & Industrial Buildings Included

Any commercial property with fuel-burning equipment, boilers, or attached parking must comply.

Alarms Must Be CSA Certified

Cheap uncertified alarms do not satisfy the Fire Code. Only approved equipment is legally compliant.

The Cost of Non-Compliance

$500+

Minimum fine for individual homeowners

$50,000

Maximum fine for individual property owners and directors

$500,000

Maximum fine for corporations on first offence

Municipalities can now issue on-the-spot Administrative Monetary Penalty tickets — no court date required.
